Conflict of interest and lack of expertise on health, water and environment in hearing of EU AGRI-ENVI committees

In this letter we express our concerns about the current composition of the hearing panel for the Food and Feed Safety Omnibus in the joint ENVI-AGRI meeting in the EU Parliament of September 2nd. We notice a lack of representation of independent expertise on human toxicology, environmental health and pesticide risk assessment. We also raise questions regarding the conflict of interest and affiliations of some of the invited speakers.

Given the importance of the Omnibus proposal and its implications for the protection of human health and the environment, we believe it is important that the hearing provides MEPs with the best available scientific evidence.

We therefore kindly ask the chairs of the EP Committees to consider the recommendations set out in the attached letter, including the possibility of adding independent scientific and public-interest voices to the program and ensuring transparency regarding speakers’ affiliations and funding relationships.
