Ahead of the meeting of SCOPAFF on 17th and 18th of May 2017, section Phytopharmaceuticals - Plant Protection Products – Legislation, we would like to share with you our comments on following points of the agenda:

Brussels, 27 March 2017

We, the undersigned organisations, call on the European Commission to reject the impending mergers of the world’s biggest agrochemical and seed companies.

In an already concentrated market, the world’s largest agri-business companies are proposing mergers – of Dow Chemical with DuPont, Monsanto with Bayer AG, and Syngenta with ChemChina. These mergers would exacerbate the problems caused by industrial farming – with negative consequences for the public, farmers and farm workers, consumers, the environment, and food security.

Inter-institutional negotiations on EU lobby transparency

As the negotiations between the European Parliament, the Commission and the Council on a revised
lobby transparency register will shortly get underway, we hope that the European Parliament will
stand firm as both an advocate for strong lobby transparency, and also as an advocate for a fully
transparent and open negotiating process which champions the public interest.

On 8 and 15 March, the European Chemicals Agency’s Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) will discuss the hazard classification of Europe’s most heavily used weedkiller, glyphosate. We are writing to expressour concerns in relation to the independence and transparency of this Committee.

Open letter: MEPs must support amendments proposed in the Commission Delegated Regulation 639/2014 to ban pesticides on EFAs.

Dear Member of the European Parliament,

We the above organisations encourage you to say ‘yes’ to the European Commission proposal to ban pesticide use in Ecological Focus Areas (EFAs) and support the respective amendments to the delegated (EU) Regulation 639/2014, as proposed by the European Commission.

We are contacting you about Better Regulation issues in the EU’s policy on Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals. First, we would like to express our appreciation to the European Commission for its stated commitment to “listen to the European Parliament, listen to all Member States, and listen to the people” (1). The harm caused by endocrine disrupting chemicals (“EDCs”) on EU citizens’ health and their environment is one of these “big problems” that the European Commission has been mandated to tackle as early as 1998 (2).

Ahead of the discussions on the criteria for endocrine disrupting chemicals in the Standing Committee of Food Animals Food and Feed on 18.11.2016 under the Pesticides 1107/2009 and Biocides 528/2012 Regulations, we would to like to share our concerns regarding the revised draft Commission proposal.

Dear Minister,

The Health Directory for the European Commission has failed to fulfil its duty to produce scientific criteria for endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that will protect the health of humans, animals and the environment from exposure to these chemicals.
