EU politicians are planning to break down the pesticide law. A very bad idea, we need to move in the opposite direction. Scientific evidence shows that pesticides are far more harmful than previously thought. Right now, a range of dangerous substances is waiting to be banned, but nothing happens. Research has shown that they can damage our health, especially that of developing children, pollute our water or kill the biodiversity on which our food production depends. But the EU doesn't act. Instead, the EU Commission has proposed a set of rules to weaken the pesticide law, called the Food and Feed Omnibus.
More PFAS, forever glyphosate?
Two rapporteurs in the EU Parliament are now proposing to make it even worse. They are prepared to sacrifice health and the environment for the sake of better profits for the chemical industry. Herbert Dorfmann from the EPP (Christian Democrats) and Michele Picaro from the Meloni Party (ECR in the parliament) propose unlimited permits for a range of dangerous chemicals, including glyphosate and PFAS pesticides. They want more exceptions to use banned pesticides and would allow three years of additional use even if it is proven that a pesticide is too dangerous to use.
We can do much better!
We don't have to poison crops and fields. Many intelligent practices exist to grow food without dangerous chemicals. Pests can be prevented in many ways, and low-risk products can be used as a last resort to combat problems. The most problematic pesticides that harm our brain, disturb the development of children, pollute our water, and kill biodiversity can and should be banned now.
Make your voice count!
Help us and write to EU Parliamentarians. This tool makes it easy to send a message to the representatives in the environment and agriculture committees in the parliament. We have excluded those who already oppose weakening the pesticide law. You will see a text proposal, and by refreshing the page, you can get a new one. Change the text and add your own words as you like. If you allow us, we will inform you of the next steps and what else you can do.
