8-Hydroxyquinoline

Type: Fungicide and bactericide.

Use: To prevent and address soil‐borne pathogens in tomato cultivation in permanent greenhouses, applied by drip irrigation.

Authorised: AT, BE, BG, CY, DE, EL, FR, HR, HU, IT, SI

Health Hazards: Toxic to reproduction: known to affect healthy pregnancies and be toxic to children's development, (Classified Repr. 1B). European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and EU Joint Research Centre (JRC) found endocrine activity. 

Environmental Hazards: Classified as very toxic to aquatic life, with acute and long-lasting effects.

Exposure: Authorised in 12 Member states: AT, BE, BG, CY, DE, EL, ES, FR, HU, MT, PT, SI.

Regulatory state of Play: Renewed in May 2025 for drip irrigation in permanent greenhouses, as a candidate for substitution, until 30 June 2032.

Alternatives: Crop rotation, mechanical weeding, resistant varieties, and avoiding wet plots of land.
